Raising twins opens the door to a unique adventure filled with both challenges and joys. For many new parents, discovering two heartbeats instead of one marks the start of a whirlwind experience. I know for us it was as if time had stopped for brief moment as two little forms came into focus on the screen during our twelve week scan. From double the delights to twice the three hourly feeds, these early years offer an exhilarating yet, exhausting journey that transforms family dynamics in remarkable ways. It is double the load but what comes with it is double the love, joy and all those firsts twice over. It truly is an amazing rollercoaster ride!
The Early Years: A Rollercoaster of Emotions
Welcoming twins is like signing up for a rollercoaster ride with a side of sleep deprivation. In those early days, parents juggle the needs of two tiny humans, which is like herding cats, but with less fur and more nappies. Studies show that parents of twins experience up to 40% more sleep deprivation than those with singletons—basically, they become honorary members of the 'mumbie' club. Sleepless nights and endless feedings might seem like a never-ending cycle of chaos, but they're also filled with love and bonding. I remember being in the twilight zone while my husband snored away, holding my little one after a feed, and just soaking in the silence. It was like the calm after a twin tornado—a feeling I didn't want to let go of, even though I was more exhausted than a marathon runner on a caffeine detox.
Twins often bring families closer together, as each milestone feels amplified. Celebrating a coo or capturing the first steps becomes a shared joy, creating an emotional journey that both parents experience together.
The Unique Bond Between Twins
The extraordinary connection twins share is truly captivating. From birth, they often communicate in their unique way, developing a mutual understanding that only siblings can appreciate. For instance, studies show that twins often create their own language known as "cryptophasia," enhancing their bond. How amazing is this?!
As they grow, twins tackle developmental milestones together—whether it's crawling or taking their first steps. This companionship lays the groundwork for confident and emotionally resilient individuals. In fact, a study showed that twins tend to have higher levels of social interaction, which can contribute to their emotional intelligence.

Shared Milestones: Double the Celebrations
Celebrating milestones with twins doubles the joy. Special occasions like birthdays transform into lively events filled with laughter, bright decorations, and double the dose of cake! It's not just a celebration for the twins but also for the parents. I remember being overly excited for the boys first birthday, we had survived the first year as new parents; navigating all the sleepless nights, illness, nappies, feeds and were celebrate 365 days of being parents to our beautiful dynamic duo. I was so proud of them and us.
Matching outfits and synchronised giggles during these celebrations create ever-lasting memories for parents. Every milestone—from first words to school days—becomes a shared adventure, nurturing deeper family connections and I can't wait for the next chapter as we celebrate more firsts, more joy and even more chaos as we enter the so called 'terrible twos'. We're bracing ourselves for this new exciting adventure.
The Power of Teamwork: Helpful Parenting Hacks
When raising twins, working efficiently is key. As new parents to twins, we quickly realised we needed some strategies to manage our time and energy effectively.
Here are some practical tips:
Batch Feeding: Feeding both twins at once can save valuable time. Consider using a double feeding pillow designed for nursing two babies simultaneously. This can significantly reduce your daily feeding time.
Shared Nap Times: Establishing a consistent interval for naps creates much-needed downtime for parents. Aim for a routine where both twins nap together for at least 1.5 to 2 hours each day. At twenty months old, my twins nap straight after lunch and are down for about 2 hours each day.
By working together as a team, parents can tackle the unique challenges of raising twins with more confidence and efficiency. This is not always the case in the week, but certainly at weekend, we share the load between us and it's important to take a break where possible- even if that means enjoying a hot drink in shifts between the play and chaos.
The Joy of Double Trouble: Mischief and Play
As they grow, twin toddlers develop adventurous spirits. Their playful antics can be exhausting yet incredibly entertaining for parents. Who can resist the sight of two little ones teaming up to create a blanket fort or sharing cookies? There's nothing more I enjoy than watching the boys play together or when they make each other laugh. As they're growing their bond is too and now I'm starting to witness them work together to cause mischief and I can't help but laugh. These moments, while sometimes chaotic, serve as reminders to embrace the joy of exploration. For example, twins working together not only fosters teamwork but also enhances their cognitive skills and creativity.
Cultivating Individuality Among Twins
While twins share a special bond, nurturing their individuality is essential. Each child has distinct personalities, preferences, and dreams. It's important for parents to help them grow into their unique selves. Looking back at photographs from when the boys were dinky dots, knowing their personalities now, I can already see that Teddy was always the more inquisitive of the two and Bear was always the cuddly, more sensitive one. Although this is changing as they grow, they both have very individual personalities, likes and dislikes. For example Ted loves cheese, Rupert will not touch it. Teddy is cheeky, mischievous and outgoing. Bear is sensitive, calm and gentle. Both love music and both exploring outside.
Encouraging individual growth can be achieved through:
Providing Individual Attention: Schedule regular one-on-one time with each twin. This helps them feel valued and strengthens their self-esteem. This can be tricky, especially as I often solo parenting in the week, but I try to do short focused activities with each of them such as a puzzle or reading a short book.
Acknowledge Differences: Celebrate their interests, whether that’s in sports, arts, or academics, by attending separate events or supporting differing hobbies. For this to work, when I do my toy rotation I think about what they would be interested in individually and together, thus fostering their individual curiosity.
Promoting individuality enriches their relationship with each other, leading to a balanced and connected sibling dynamic.
The Village: Community Support
Raising twins is not only a personal journey; it’s a collective effort. Building a network of support with other parents of multiples is invaluable.
Engaging your community can help in several ways:
Join Local Parenting Groups: Many communities host groups specifically for parents of twins and multiples. These settings provide a space to share experiences and gain advice.
Participate in Playdates: Organising playdates with other twins can encourage socialization and lessen feelings of isolation for both parents and children.
Seek Help When Needed: Asking family or friends for help can provide a massive relief. From babysitting to meal prep, community support can make a difference in managing dual parenthood.
Creating a support system around the unique experience of raising twins can be incredibly helpful during challenging times. You will meet other twin parents and be able to share in the unique trials and triumphs of raising two little people. It really will make the challenges that little bit more manageable and feel less alone in the day-to-day chaos.
The Gift of Shared Experiences
The shared experiences twins accumulate together create a strong foundation for lasting memories and friendship. From those early days sleeping side by side to navigating their first day of school, these moments become pivotal in shaping their lives.
Parents have the opportunity to nurture collaboration, empathy, and understanding—skills that will serve twins well throughout their future.

Embracing the Chaos
Raising twins during the early years presents a wide range of emotions, from joy and laughter to exhaustion and frustration. Embracing the chaos is crucial for a fulfilling parenting experience.
It's important to recognise that feeling overwhelmed at times is normal. Connecting with fellow parents can provide comfort and validation. The blend of chaos and joy is simply part of this incredible journey.
The Adventure Ahead
The adventure of raising twins in the early years is filled with double the love, laughter, and learning. By embracing the unique challenges and joys that accompany raising two at once, families create a vibrant tapestry of experiences that will shape their lives.
As the twins grow older, I am witnessing their sibling bond deepen, offering invaluable life skills and social nuances that emerge from shared life experiences. Through the highs and lows, as parents of twins, we discover that raising 'double trouble' is not just about managing the demands of two. It’s about celebrating a shared existence filled with growth, love, and lifelong companionship. Ultimately, cherish the exciting journey of raising twins; it’s an adventure that imparts stories and memories to last a lifetime.
